This performance offers a rare opportunity to hear the soulful Nocturne for String Quartet (1960) by Robert Helps. This contemporary piece is contrasted and complemented by Smetana's splendid String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, “From My Life”, and Mendelssohn's brilliant String Quartet No. 4 in E minor, Op. 44, No. 2.

We will close the season with this very diverse program, which includes the rarely performed Five Pieces for String Quartet (1923) by Erwin Schulhoff, and the 20th century classic, String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 73 by Shostakovich. The season and this performance with end with Beethoven's monumental String Quartet No. 8, in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2.
